The application of generative manufacturing technology for direct tool-less individualised production opens up completely new freedom for design engineers. However it is also accompanied by new commitments. Undercuts and internal channels no longer pose an obstacle technically in manufacturing. On the other hand it must already be established at the design stage, on which machine, in which direction, from which material and with which set of parameters the component is to be built for reproducible quality production.
The basic understanding of thin film technology as well as detailed knowledge about features like supports was not taught to most of today’s design engineers during their training. Therefore the Design Engineer Day has set itself the goal of imparting the necessary additional knowledge to designer engineers to optimise components designed for traditional manufacturing for generative manufacturing. Knowledge of processing basics is assumed.
